Last Updated on April 12, 2023 by Kennedy
Making a facetime call especially facetime video call and suddenly what you saw is facetime unavailable.
The first thing that will pop into your head will be what does facetime unavailable mean, what is it trying to tell you or explain to you.
By mere looking at the words, it simply means that facetime wasn’t available or unavailable. But there are more to it because something is really making facetime to be unavailable and that which I will explain in this article.
What does facetime unavailable mean?
Facetime unavailable simply means that a facetime call wasn’t answered, simply because the call didn’t go through or the recipient declined the call.
This is very common if you’re making a facetime video call, after a couple of rings or beeps during a facetime call, what follows next will be facetime unavailable.
Mostly this is caused by the recipient, and below are the reasons or causes of facetime unavailable;
- When the recipient phone is on do not disturb mode or focus mode.
- When the recipient disabled facetime.
- When the recipient is ignoring the facetime call.
- When the recipient has no active internet connection.
- When the recipient phone is switched off.
- When the recipient is canceling the facetime call.
- When the recipient blocked you on facetime.
Don’t Miss: Why does it say facetime failed during a facetime call explained
These are the causes of facetime unavailable and I will explain them one after the other.
1. When the recipient phone is on do not disturb mode or focus mode
Do not disturb mode or any other focus mode option do block both cellular calls and facetime calls on iPhone or any other apple device.
If a recipient has do not disturb mode enabled on his or her phone, be rest assured that if you call the recipient on facetime, the call won’t get through to the recipient, and at your end it will show facetime unavailable.
One of the cons or disadvantage of facetime is that it doesn’t redirect calls to voicemail just like the cellular calls.
For example, if a recipient enabled DND on his phone and you called the person on cellular call, it will automatically redirect you straight to voicemail if available on the recipient phone.
However, for facetime call, it won’t redirect you to voicemail but rather it will seem as if the call is going through and ringing, then after 11 beeps you will see facetime unavailable on your screen.
So one major causes of facetime unavailable is due to do not disturb mode being active on the recipient phone or device.

2. When the recipient disabled facetime
Someone may be previously be using facetime and which you have been calling the person on facetime, this time around it shows facetime unavailable, this could be due to the recipient disabling facetime on his device.
It does happen, but quite rare to see.
Disabling facetime will make a facetime call to show unavailable after ringing for a good 30 seconds or 11 beeps. In the true sense of it, facetime wasn’t ringing because the recipient is not seeing your facetime call.
3. When the recipient has no active internet connection
No active internet connection will make a facetime call to show facetime unavailable after a call.
As facetime is a voip services, it requires an active internet connection to make and receive calls, be it facetime audio call and facetime video call.
Kindly note that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that allows voice and multimedia communication over the internet rather than traditional phone lines. It converts voice signals into digital packets and transmits them over the internet to the recipient, where they are reconverted into voice signals.
VoIP technology has many advantages over traditional phone systems.
It is often cheaper because it uses the internet, which is already in place and doesn’t require additional infrastructure. It also offers features such as call forwarding, conference calls, and video conferencing.
Additionally, because VoIP uses digital signals, it can be integrated with other digital technologies like email and messaging, making it easier to communicate across different platforms.
VoIP can be used in many ways, from simple applications such as Skype or Google Hangouts, Zoom, etc to large-scale enterprise systems for businesses.
It is also becoming increasingly popular in the telecommunications industry, with many companies now offering VoIP-based services as an alternative to traditional phone lines.
So when you’re talking about the voip services, kindly note that it includes the likes of facetime, whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, telegram, viber, Google voice, Google meet, etc.
All these requires internet connection to function, so as facetime and without an active internet connection, facetime will show facetime unavailable.
4. When the recipient is ignoring the facetime call
If a recipient is ignoring your call on facetime, it will show facetime unavailable at the end of the call.
This is very common, when a facetime is not answered, it will show unavailable at the end of the call.
Maybe the recipient is very much busy to answer your call, or simply ignoring your facetime call.
5. When the recipient is cancelling the facetime call
Another causes of facetime showing unavailable is when the recipient is declining the call or probably cancelling the call.
If a recipient receives an incoming facetime call and taps on the cancel button, the call will end right away and at the side of the call, it will show facetime unavailable.
To know if the recipient cancelled or declined your facetime, go to your call log and check the call you made to the recipient.
If it shows cancelled call, then you should know that the recipient declined your call.
Maybe you’re disturbing or the recipient is not in a mood to answer a call. Below is an example of how it will look.
6. When the recipient blocked you on facetime
This case is quite popular, if you happen to be blocked by the recipient, it will definitely show facetime unavailable when calling the person.
One major causes of facetime unavailable is being blocked by the recipient.
Once you’re blocked by the recipient on facetime or iphone, it will show unavailable after the fake 11 beeps or 30 second ringing.
Before you can conclude that indeed you have been blocked by the recipient, this is what you need to do.
- Call the recipient on cellular call.
- Send iMessage to the recipient.
Now listen, if someone blocked you on facetime, you won’t be able to call the person on cellular network service call or send iMessage to the person.
If you call the person on cellular call, you will be redirected straight to voicemail if available on the recipient phone, or you will see user busy if the recipient has no active voicemail on his or her phone.
For iMessage, it won’t show delivered.
Lastly is location sharing. If you’re sharing location with the person, you will no longer be able to see the person’s location as location sharing will stop.
Note that when a recipient phone is switched off, it will show facetime unavailable at the end of the call.
FaceTime Unavailable after 1 ring
Facetime unavailable after 1 ring will occur if the recipient is declining or cancelling the facetime.
Facetime will ring for a good 11 beeps or 30 seconds before the call ends and show up the facetime unavailable. In a situation whereby the call showed unavailable after 1 ring, then the recipient is declining the call or the recipient phone went out of internet network service.
In other to find out if the recipient is declining your facetime call, simply go to your phone call log and check on that very recipient and the call you made.
If it shows cancelled call, then you should know that the recipient declined or cancelled your facetime call.
Maybe you were disturbing the recipient as the person is busy, or probably doesn’t want to answer your call.
FaceTime rings twice then says unavailable is caused by the recipient declining the facetime call. Facetime should ring for 11 beeps or 30 seconds before shows facetime unavailable.
Anything under 30 seconds or 11 beeps is caused by the recipient declining the facetime call just like facetime unavailable after 6 rings.
FaceTime unavailable turn on cellular data
This means that there was no active internet connection for a facetime call to occur, and such request at least a cellular data to be active.
Once there’s no active internet connection be it Wi-Fi or a cellular data, facetime call will not go through as it will display unavailable at the end of the call.
How long does facetime ring before it says unavailable?
Facetime should ring for 30 seconds or 11 times before it says or display facetime unavailable.
Even if you’re blocked by the recipient, the recipient phone is switched off or offline without an active internet connection, dnd is enabled on the recipient phone, facetime will ring for a good 11 times before it shows unavailable.
Anything that goes under 11 rings or beeps, or 30 seconds ringing, then you should know that the recipient is seeing your facetime call, but rather declining the call.
FaceTime unavailable meaning blocked?
facetime unavailable can mean blocked because if a recipient blocked you on facetime, it will show unavailable when calling the person.
However, facetime unavailable doesn’t necessarily mean blocked as do not disturb or focus mode, offline or no internet causes unavailable on facetime.
Does facetime unavailable mean they declined?
Facetime unavailable doesn’t necessarily mean they declined though if a facetime call is declined, it will show unavailable.
However, this will occur if the facetime call didn’t ring for the required number of seconds which is 30 seconds or 11 beeps.
So anything that goes below 30 seconds facetime ringing or 11 beeps, then kindly note that the recipient is declining your facetime call and which should show up on the call log as a cancelled call.
And with this, I come to the conclusion of today’s question of the day, what does facetime unavailable mean. Know that it means a facetime call wasn’t answered simply because the call didn’t go through, or the recipient declined the call.
