Read receipts is a feature in a smartphone that allows a sender to know when a text message has been opened and read by the recipient.
As long as read receipts is turned on or enabled on any smartphone, it will definitely notify if a text has been read.
Sometimes, we don’t like a received text message to show read especially when hiding from someone or not in the mode of texting or chatting.
This might warrant someone turning off read receipts on his Messages app.
This leads us to the question of the day.
Does turning off read receipts work both ways?
The answer is yes. Turning off read receipts work both ways though it depends on the instant messaging apps or services.
As read receipts are only available on instant messages, each instant messaging has the way read receipts work.
For Example.
On whatsapp, if you turn off read receipts on your whatsapp messenger, you have automatically turned off read receipts for others. That is to say, all your whatsapp contacts won’t be able to see your read receipts whenever they sent a message to you on whatsapp.
However, you won’t be able to see their whatsapp read receipts whenever you send a message to them on whatsapp.
This is how whatsapp works.
In order to see someone’s read receipts on whatsapp, you will have to enable read receipts on your whatsapp messenger.
Once you turned it off, your contacts won’t be able to see your read receipts, you as well won’t be able to see their read receipts until you enable read receipts on your Whatsapp messenger.
However, this is quite different on iMessage.
On iMessage, If you disable or turn off read receipts, you have only turned it off for your contacts.
That is to say you can receive or see their read receipts whenever you send a message to them, but they won’t be able to see your read receipts whenever they send a message to you.

On Viber, If you turn off read receipts for others in your viber app, it will also turn off for you.
This means if you turn off read receipts on your Viber app, your contacts won’t be able to see read receipts whenever they send a message to you on viber.
Also, you won’t be able to see their read receipts when you send a message to them on viber.
Viber works very similar to whatsapp in terms of read receipts.
You have to turn on read receipts on viber to be able to see read receipts whenever you send a message to someone on viber app.
From my observations, read receipts is a must if you want to see read receipts whenever you send a message to someone on your smartphone using any of the instant messaging apps like whatsapp, viber, signal, etc, except for iMessage.
So far, only iMessage is where you can turn off read receipts and still be able to see read or get read receipts whenever you send a message to someone using iMessage.
Asking does turning off read receipts work both ways, the answer is yes but it doesn’t work both ways on iMessage.

The text will still say read as long as read receipts is enabled when you opened and read the text message.
However, if you’re using an iPhone and which you received an iMessage or iMessages, before opening the received message, all you have to do is to head over to the Settings app and open it.

It is very much easy on iMessage.
This also applies to other instant messaging apps like whatsapp, viber, signal, telegram, etc.
For Example.
If someone send a message to you on whatsapp and which you don’t want the person to know that you have read the message by turning off read receipts.
All you have to do is to open your whatsapp messenger, don’t open the received messages.

The answer is yes. It will say read because you opened and read the message before turning off read receipts.
If you turned off read receipts before opening the message, it won’t show read or trigger read receipts.
What is required from you is to turn off read receipts before opening the message.
Even it you have received the message on your iPhone without turning off read receipts, simply don’t open the message.

If you turn off read receipts in mid conversation, subsequent messages will not indicate read or trigger read receipts.
But previous messages you received and opened before turning off read receipts will still indicate that you have opened and read the messages.
If you are in a middle of a conversation and decides to turn off read receipts, please don’t bother replying the sender’s messages as it will mean ignored.
But remember, if you’re chatting on whatsapp and later enabled read receipts, those messages that didn’t trigger read receipts will still not indicate read as it will remain a grey two ticks.
Now if subsequent messages shows two green ticks, this will in turn indicate to the other person that at some period in the conversation or chat, you turned off read receipts.
On iMessage, the other person will not know as iMessage only shows read for the last or latest received iMessages.
On viber, if you turn off read receipts in a middle of a conversation, subsequent messages won’t show two purple ticks indicating message has been read.
However, if you enabled read receipts and go back to the messages that didn’t trigger read receipts, they will all trigger read receipts and show read on the side of the sender’s viber account.

But on the contrary, turning off read receipts may indicate ignored especially when you didn’t reply someone’s messages.

People keep read receipts on in order to know when a sent message has been opened and read by the recipient.
Without enabling read receipts, you won’t be able to know if a recipient has read a sent message especially on whatsapp, viber, signal, telegram, messenger and even on iMessage.
On iMessage, you can turn off your read receipts and still be able to see other contacts read receipts whenever you send a message to them.
