On iPhone, there are two major ways to send messages and which include iMessage and SMS text messages.
Mostly, iPhone users tend to use iMessage compared to SMS text messages simply because iMessage is very economical compared to SMS text messages.
As iMessage is very popular, we’ll be looking at the question of the day and which is;
Does iMessage deliver when the phone is dead?
By default, iMessage will never deliver if the recipient’s phone is dead but if the recipient has his apple id account signed into another apple device like an iPad, mac, or an apple watch, iMessage will be delivered if any of these devices are active.
But in the case whereby the recipient has only just one apple device like the iPhone, iMessage will never get delivered if the phone is switched off or simply dead.
For example.
Charles has an iPhone, iPad, and the apple watch 8 ultra, and Charles is using a single apple id and password for these apple devices.
Now if Charles’s iPhone is dead or switched off but his apple watch 8 ultra and iPad pro are active with an active internet connection, iMessage will be delivered to any of these devices irrespective of the fact that Charles’s iPhone is dead or switched off.
In a situation whereby Charles has only an iPhone but doesn’t have an iPad, mac, or apple watch, iMessage will never get delivered to Charles if his phone is dead or switched off.
This is how iMessage works.
Once someone has multiple apple devices and which they are connected to the same apple account, iMessages will be received in any of the devices if the person’s iPhone is switched off or dead.

Situations that will prevent iMessage from getting Delivered
There are certain situations that prevent iMessage even if the recipient has other apple devices like an iPad, mac, or apple watch.
They are as follows;
1.1. When blocked by the Recipient
This is one of the major reasons why iMessage will never get delivered, simply because you have been blocked by the recipient.
In this type of situation, even if the recipient has multiple apple devices and they are connected to a single apple id and password, iMessage will never get delivered to the recipient.
This isn’t just about iMessage but also applied to others like facetime, cellular calls, and SMS.
Once someone blocks you on iMessage, you won’t be able to reach the person on facetime, SMS, and through cellular calls.
This is quite different on android as you have to block someone on the phone app and, message app in order to prevent the person from reaching out to you on phone.
But on iPhone, a block on the message app applies to other features of the phone.
So being blocked on iMessage prevent iMessage from getting delivered.

1.2. No active Internet connection
For you to use iMessage to send and receive iMessages, you must have an active internet connection on your apple device.
If there is no active internet connection, then it means that iMessage will never work on the device until there’s an active internet connection like the wifi or cellular data.
Talking about does iMessage deliver when the phone is dead, kindly note that if someone has multiple apple devices and which a single apple id and password connected to them all, if these devices don’t have an active internet connection on them, iMessage will say delivered.
Being an instant messaging service, the internet is very compulsory for iMessage.
1.3. When iMessage is disabled
For iMessage to work on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or apple watch, iMessage must be enabled and active.
If you have iMessage disabled then don’t expect iMessage to work on your phone.
If you’re a newbie, kindly open the setting app, scroll down to Messages and open it.
On the next page, you will see iMessage, and make sure it is turned on as shown in the picture below.
Also, make sure that iMessage is activated on your iPhone as well.
If iMessage is enabled on your iPhone but wasn’t activated, then you won’t be able to use it to send iMessages or receive messages from iMessage.
Once iMessage is activated on your iPhone, you will see Send and Receive right below iMessage as shown in the above picture.
Blocked vs dead phone on iMessage
The difference between blocked and dead phone on iMessage is that a blocked person’s iMessage will never get delivered, while a dead phone will get delivered once the person’s phone is active with an active internet connection.
If you’re blocked by someone on iPhone or iMessage, don’t expect your messages to get delivered to the person as such will never happen until the person unblocks you.
In the situation whereby you were not blocked but rather the recipient’s iPhone is dead, the sent message will get delivered to the recipient once the recipient has an active internet connection o his iPhone.
However, if the recipient has other apple devices like an iPad, apple watch, or mac, and which they are active with an active internet connection, sent iMessages will be delivered to any of these devices as long as the recipient has his apple id and password connected to these devices.
This comes back again to the question being asked does iMessage deliver when the phone is dead?
Also remember that once you’re blocked on iPhone, you won’t be able to send iMessages to the other person, but the person can still send iMessage to you.
The person can still call you on cellular calls and facetime, but you won’t be able to call the person on cellular calls and facetime.
Will an iMessage Eventually deliver if the phone is dead or switched off?
The answer is yes. iMessage will eventually deliver if the phone is dead or switched off as long as it doesn’t exceed 72 hours of sending the message.
This is from my experience.
For example.
You sent an iMessage to lucy on October 1st, 2022 which didn’t get delivered as you assumed that lucy’s phone was dead or switched off.
Now if lucy’s phone happens to be active within the 72 hours you sent the message, the message will eventually get delivered to lucy’s phone. The 72 hours will be on the 4th of October 2022.
Once it gets to the 5th of October 2022, the sent iMessage will never get delivered to lucy’s phone even if the phone is active along with an active internet connection.
I’m saying this based on my observation I tested to fi out if iMessage will eventually deliver after so many hours has passed and I found out that it will, but that will be within 72 hours of sending the message.
Aside from iMessage, let’s take a look to see if facetime will ring when the iPhone is dead or switched off.
Will facetime ring when the phone is dead?
By default, facetime will never ring. But if the recipient has his apple id and password connected to other apple devices like iPad, mac, or the apple watch, a facetime call will go through.
This goes on to show you that the way iMessage work is also the same way facetime work as they are both instant messaging services from Apple.
So if your iPhone is dead or switched off but your iPad, mac, or your apple watch is active and connected to your iPhone apple id and password, don’t worry as you will receive iMessage sto any of these as long as they are active with an active internet connection even when your phone is dead or switched off.
And with this, I come to the conclusion on the question of the day, does iMessage deliver when the phone is dead.
