When it comes to having one of the best instant messaging app on iPhone and iPad, there’s no doubt that iMessage should be on top of the list. iMessage works similar to whatsapp though it can’t be used in making audio and video calls.
iMessage and Google rcs chat are same compared to whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger and others.
So the question we have today and which I which will explain to you in this article is;
Does imessage automatically save audio messages?
Since the release of ios 14, iMessage will not automatically save audio messages but will only store the audio in the message app. It is left for the user to save the audio message on it’s iPhone.
Previously iMessage will delete an audio message after two minutes but right now you can have your audio remain permanent on your message app.
Does imessage automatically save audio messages?
iMessage doesn’t automatically save audio messages but rather the user will have to save the audio messages on it’s iPhone or iPad.
Sinxe the release of ios 11 or 12 if I’m confused, audio messages will remain permanent on an iphone or iPad without getting deleted. By default audio messages will expire after two minutes and it is left for to make your audio messages remain permanent in your iPhone or iPad.
As imessage doesn’t automatically save audio messages, I will how you can organize and save audio files on your iPhone.
First is to prevent your audio messages from expiring.

How to prevent audio messages from expiring on iPhone or iPad
To prevent your audio messages from expiring, open the settings app and scroll to message and open it.
Scroll down to audio messages and tap on Expire.
Tap and open Expire and you will see two options which are;
- After 2 minutes
- Never
Kindly select never. Once you have done that all audio messages received in your iPad or iPhone will forever remain there unless you deleted the audio message yourself.
How to save audio messages on iPhone and iPad
As iMessage does not automatically save audio messages on iPhone or iPad, though it will remain permanent in the message app, you can do better by saving them in your file app.
It is a lot better as because you can organize your audio messages in your file app compared to all of littered in every conversation on your iMessage.
Now let me show you how to save audio messages on iPhone and iPad.
Open your iMessage and the conversation where you the audio message. Locate the audio message and press hold on it, you will be presented with options which includes;
- Save
- Reply
- Copy
- More
Please don’t bother tapping on save button cause it doesn’t work so far or maybe not working for me. Kindly tap on copy to copy the audio message.
Open you file app and I recommend to create a folder and you should name it audio messages.
Once you have done that, inside the audio messages folder press hold on the screen or any available space and you will be presented with the option to paste the audio message you copied.
Wait for the audio message to copy and afterwards you are good to go. This is how you should copy and paste all your other audio files one after the other and have them saved in your file app.
Where do audio files save on iphone?
Audio files are saved in the app on iphone. iMessage audio files are saved in the files and it requires the user to save the audio files in the file app.
IOS is very much different from android, on Android all audio files are automatically saved in the phone internal phone or SD card. On iPhone you have to manually save audio files as iphone or iMessage doesn’t automatically save audio messages or audio files.

Saving whatsapp audio files on iPhone
To save whatsapp audio files on your iPhone, open your whatsapp and locate the audio message. Press hold on the message and you will be presented with five options and which includes;
- Star
- Reply
- Forward
- Report
- Delete
Kindly tap on forward and look below your screen you will see the save button locate at the right hand corner of your screen. Tap on the send button and on the next screen you will see options to save or share the whatsapp audio message.
Scroll down a bit and you will see save to files.
Tap on save to files and select where you save the whatsapp audio messages and tap on the save button.
Thats it.
You have successfully saved the whatsapp audio files or whatsapp audio message on your iPhone. I must admit that android is a lot easier as immediately you downloaded the audio file in order to listen to the audio message it will automatically be saved in your phone internal storage(whatsapp audio folder).
Where do iMessage audio files get saved?
iMessage audio files will remain in the messages app unless you manually save the audio files on your file app.
If you set your iMessage audio files to expire after two minutes, you will practically lose the audio messages if you don’t immediately save the audio messages. So it is better to set it never to expire and this will prevent any audio messages you receive on your iMessage to get deleted after two minutes.

Does iMessage delete audio messages?
iMessage will only delete audio messages if set to expire after two minutes. In order to prevent iMessage audio messages to get deleted after two minutes, kindly set it to not to expire.
This requires you to open the message app, scroll down to messages and open it. Scroll all the way down audio messages and tap on Expire and select never.
Having set your iMessage audio messages not to expire, they will never get deleted and will remain in your message app. You can as well save the audio messages in files app, scroll up and see how you can go about it.
How can I see all my voice messages on iMessage?
You cannot see all your voice messages on iMessage, but instead you will have to open each of the conversations in order to see all your iMessage audio files.
This is why I do recommend to create a folder for your audio messages and name it audio messages.
Now what you have to do is to copy all the audio messages one after the other straight into the folder and this will be easy to access all your iMessage audio files and as well as the other audio messages from Whatsapp, Skype, Facebook messenger, etc.
Does iMessage notify when you replay a voice message?
iMessage will not notify you if you replay a voice message or even play a voice message as it will only show delivered.
You shouldn’t bother yourself thinking iMessage will notify the sender if you replay or played a voice message cause that will not happen.
Do audio messages expire if not opened?
On iPhone, audio messages will not expire if not opened. However, audio messages will only expire if you have opened and listened to the audio message.
But if you really want to keep any received audio messages on your iPhone, you have to set your iMessage audio messages not to expire. Once again I have already explained that in this article and kindly scroll up and see how to go about it.
What does kept mean on iMessage audio?
On iMessage audio, kept means to keep or save an audio message you sent on your iPhone.
If you send an audio message on your iPhone and never care to keep the audio message or to tap on keep, the sent message will be removed or get deleted afterwards. In order to preserve the sent audio message on your iPhone, you have to tap on keep and it will permanently keep the audio message on your iPhone until you get rid of the message yourself.

Also bear in mind that as long as audio message settings are set to never expire, all your iMessage audio messages will remain in the messages app.
