First, this happened because Send as SMS is enabled on your iPhone.
On your iPhone, if send as sms when imessage is unavailable is enabled on your iPhone, sending a text message to a contact in your iPhone will be green but only if the recipient iMessage is unavailable.
The recipient iMessage is unavailable due to the fact that the recipient phone is switched off or maybe has no internet connection.
